Ultimate Oscillator

Overview

The Ultimate Oscillator blends buying pressure across three timeframes — short (7), medium (14), and long (28) — into a single reading, reducing the false signals that plague single-period oscillators. It is effective for spotting divergences in crypto and stock markets. Combine it with trend-following tools from our indicator guide library for a robust multi-timeframe trading strategy.

How It Works

Buying Pressure = Close − True Low. True Range is used as the normaliser. The oscillator averages buying pressure over 7, 14, and 28 periods with weights of 4, 2, and 1 respectively, then scales the result to 0-100. This multi-period approach smooths out single-timeframe noise.

Key Signals

  • Readings above 70 with bearish divergence = potential sell signal.
  • Readings below 30 with bullish divergence = potential buy signal.
  • Larry Williams' three-step divergence rule provides the highest-probability setups.
  • Rising Ultimate Oscillator in an uptrend confirms momentum health.

Common Mistakes

  • Trading overbought/oversold levels without waiting for divergence confirmation.
  • Using the Ultimate Oscillator as a standalone signal — it works best as a filter.
  • Not understanding the three-step buy/sell rule that Williams designed for this indicator.
