Basing

A consolidation phase in which an asset's price trades within a narrow range following a decline, forming a horizontal support zone often referred to as a base. During the basing period, selling pressure gradually diminishes as sellers become exhausted, while patient buyers accumulate positions at lower prices. Technical analysts view a completed basing pattern as a potential precursor to a bullish reversal, particularly when the eventual breakout is accompanied by increasing volume.

Example

After a 40% selloff, the stock spent three months basing between $45 and $50 before breaking out above resistance on heavy volume.
