Block Height

Block height refers to the number of blocks in the chain between a given block and the very first block (the genesis block) on a blockchain. It serves as a sequential identifier, with the genesis block being block height 0. Block height is commonly used to reference specific points in a blockchain's history, to track network progress, and to coordinate protocol upgrades that activate at predetermined block heights.

Example

The Bitcoin halving event occurs every 210,000 blocks, with the most recent one triggered at block height 840,000 in April 2024.
