Claimant Count
The Claimant Count is a UK economic indicator that measures the number of people claiming unemployment-related benefits, released monthly by the Office for National Statistics. It is used as a proxy for unemployment trends and is closely watched by traders for its impact on GBP and Bank of England policy decisions. A rising claimant count can signal economic weakness and increase expectations for rate cuts, while declining numbers support a more hawkish monetary outlook.
Example
“GBP/USD fell after the UK Claimant Count rose by 32,000, more than double the forecast, raising concerns about a weakening labor market.”
