Earnings Recession
An earnings recession occurs when corporate earnings decline for two or more consecutive quarters. It often precedes or accompanies an economic recession and can signal weakening business conditions, leading to bearish sentiment in equity markets.
Example
“S&P 500 companies experienced an earnings recession in late 2022 when aggregate profits fell for three straight quarters, prompting many fund managers to rotate into defensive sectors.”
