Hedging

The practice of taking an offsetting position in a related asset to reduce the risk of adverse price movements in an existing investment. Common hedging instruments include options, futures, and inverse ETFs. Hedging reduces potential losses but typically also limits potential gains.

Example

An airline company hedged against rising fuel costs by purchasing crude oil futures contracts, locking in a fixed price and protecting their operating margins.
