Historical Volatility

A statistical measure of the dispersion of past price returns for an asset over a specific period. Unlike implied volatility, it is based on actual historical price data rather than market expectations.

Example

Bitcoin's 30-day historical volatility spiked to 80% during the crash, far above its average of 45%, prompting options traders to adjust their position sizing for the elevated risk.
