Underlying Market
The market for the base asset from which a derivative contract derives its value. For example, the underlying market for a crude oil futures contract is the physical crude oil market, and for an equity option it is the stock market where the shares trade. Understanding the underlying market's dynamics, including supply and demand fundamentals, is essential for pricing and trading derivatives accurately.
Example
“The options trader monitored the underlying market closely, noting that the stock had hit a key support level that could influence the value of her put options.”
