Validator

A participant in a proof-of-stake blockchain network who locks up (stakes) cryptocurrency as collateral to verify transactions, propose new blocks, and maintain consensus. Validators are selected to create blocks based on factors such as the amount staked, randomisation algorithms, and length of staking. They earn rewards for honest participation but face penalties (slashing) for malicious behaviour or downtime, creating economic incentives to maintain network integrity.

Example

The Ethereum validator earned 0.05 ETH in rewards for successfully proposing a block, while another validator was slashed for submitting conflicting attestations.
