Tangem NFC Wallet Cards
Overview
Tangem wallets look like credit cards with embedded NFC chips and EAL6+ secure elements. There's no screen, no battery, no USB — you tap the card on your phone to sign transactions via the Tangem app. The private key is generated inside the card's secure chip and can never be extracted. Available in 2-card and 3-card sets for built-in backup. It's the most minimalist hardware wallet design available.
Security Features
EAL6+ secure element embedded in card, Private key generated on-chip — never extracted, NFC communication (no USB, no Bluetooth, no WiFi), No battery needed (powered by NFC field from phone), Multi-card backup: 2-card or 3-card sets (clone key to backup cards), IP68 dust and water resistant, 25-year chip lifespan guaranteed, Access code and biometric protection via Tangem app
Pros & Cons
Pros: ultra-portable (credit card size), no charging, IP68 durable, extremely simple to use, affordable ($55-70 for 2-3 cards), EAL6+ security. Cons: no screen (must trust phone app for transaction verification), NFC only (need compatible phone), limited to Tangem app ecosystem, no advanced features (no passphrase, no multisig), seed phrase not directly exportable (card IS the backup).
Setup Steps
1. Purchase from tangem.com (2-card or 3-card pack). 2. Download Tangem app (iOS/Android). 3. Tap the primary card to your phone to create the wallet. 4. Set up an access code. 5. Tap the backup card(s) to clone the key. 6. Store backup card(s) in separate secure location(s). 7. To transact: open Tangem app → create transaction → tap card to sign. 8. No seed phrase to manage — the cards ARE the backup.
Best For
Beginners intimidated by seed phrases, travellers wanting portable security, gift-givers, elderly or non-technical users, anyone wanting maximum simplicity
Tips & Recommendations
Tangem's innovation is eliminating the seed phrase entirely — the multi-card backup replaces it. This is great for simplicity but means you're trusting the Tangem hardware completely. Buy the 3-card pack and store cards in three different locations. If you lose all cards, your crypto is gone — there's no seed phrase to recover from.
