Choppy Market

A Choppy Market, or one with a lot of \"chop\", is slang for a range-bound market. The market swings up and down a lot, with lots of volatility and no apparent trend. Choppy markets occur when the fight between buyers (bulls) and sellers (bears) is roughly even. Many trend-following strategies struggle in choppy conditions, so experienced traders often reduce position sizes or switch to mean-reversion approaches during these periods.

Example

After weeks of choppy market conditions, most swing traders sat on the sidelines waiting for a clear breakout or breakdown.
