In trading, a client refers to an individual or institutional customer who opens an account with a broker or financial institution to execute trades in financial markets. Clients can range from retail traders to large institutional investors such as hedge funds and pension funds. Brokers have a regulatory obligation to assess each client's risk tolerance and investment objectives to ensure suitable product offerings.
