Repo Market

The market where repurchase agreements are traded, allowing participants to borrow and lend cash on a short-term basis using securities as collateral. It plays a critical role in providing liquidity to the financial system.

Example

In September 2019, overnight repo rates spiked to 10% due to a liquidity squeeze in the repo market, forcing the Fed to inject billions in emergency funding to stabilize short-term rates.
