About Indian Commodity Exchange Limited

Indian Commodity Exchange Limited (ICEX), established around 2009 and headquartered in Mumbai, was India's first exchange to offer diamond futures contracts, a pioneering product in the global commodity derivatives space. ICEX also listed precious metals, agricultural, and base metals futures. The exchange operated under SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) regulation. Following challenges with trading volumes and market development, SEBI cancelled ICEX's recognition as a national commodity exchange, and it subsequently ceased operations.

National Spot Exchange Limited (NSEL) was an Indian electronic spot commodity exchange launched in 2008, promoted by Financial Technologies (India) Ltd. In July 2013, NSEL was unable to meet settlement obligations totalling approximately ₹5,600 crore (~$900 million USD), resulting in one of India's largest commodity exchange scandals. SEBI and government authorities ordered a settlement freeze, suspended trading, and initiated investigations. NSEL has remained suspended since the 2013 default.
