ISM Manufacturing Survey (PMI)

A monthly survey by the Institute for Supply Management that measures the health of the U.S. manufacturing sector. A reading above 50 indicates expansion; below 50 signals contraction.

Example

For example, when the ISM Manufacturing PMI drops to 47.8 from 50.2, equity markets may sell off as the reading below 50 indicates the U.S. manufacturing sector is contracting.
