Sahm Rule
An economic indicator that signals the start of a recession when the three-month moving average of the U.S. unemployment rate rises by 0.50 percentage points or more from its low over the previous 12 months.
Example
“When the Sahm Rule indicator crossed the 0.50 threshold in mid-2024, recession fears intensified and traders began rotating into defensive sectors.”
