Settlement Period

The time between the trade date and the settlement date when the actual exchange of assets and payment occurs. Standard settlement periods vary by instrument, such as T+1 for stocks and T+2 for forex.

Example

The U.S. moved to a T+1 settlement period for equities in 2024, reducing the time from trade execution to final settlement from two business days to one.
