Theta Decay

The rate at which an option loses value as it approaches its expiration date. Also known as time decay, theta decay accelerates as expiration nears, eroding the premium of options contracts.

Example

With only 5 days to expiration, theta decay accelerated sharply and the trader's out-of-the-money call lost 60% of its remaining value in the final week.
