Institutional Investor

A large organization such as a bank, pension fund, hedge fund, or insurance company that invests substantial sums of money in financial markets. Their trades can significantly move market prices.

Example

For example, when a large pension fund like CalPERS rebalances its portfolio and sells $2 billion in equities, the selling pressure can noticeably move stock prices across the market.
