Ugly

A colloquial term used in financial markets to describe extremely unfavourable market conditions, a particularly bad trade outcome, or a severely deteriorating chart pattern. When traders describe a market or trade as ugly, they typically mean that price action is chaotic, losses are mounting, or the technical picture has broken down significantly. The term carries no formal definition but is widely understood among market participants as indicating distressed conditions.

Example

The session turned ugly after the surprise rate hike, with the index dropping 4% in heavy volume and triggering circuit breakers.
